Narayan Jagadeesan Steps into Big Shoes: India’s New Wicket‑Keeper for The Oval Test

London / Chennai, 28 July 2025

In a dramatic turn of events ahead of the decisive fifth Test against England, seasoned Indian keeper-batter Narayan Jagadeesan has been officially named as replacement for an injured Rishabh Pant in India’s squad for the upcoming match at The Oval, beginning 31 July 2025.

Pant Ruled Out, Jagadeesan Comes In

India’s vice‑captain and star wicketkeeper, Rishabh Pant, sustained a fractured right foot during the fourth Test at Old Trafford. Despite the injury, Pant returned to bat and scored a gritty half-century, but scans confirmed the fracture was severe enough to rule him out of the series’ final match. The BCCI confirmed on 27 July that Pant is unavailable, and wished him a swift recovery.

In his place, the Men’s Selection Committee has brought in N Jagadeesan, a consistent performer in domestic cricket, especially in red-ball formats. Jagadeesan, the 29-year-old from Tamil Nadu, has amassed 3,373 first-class runs across 52 matches, including 10 centuries and 14 fifties, at a strong average of 47.50.

Born in Coimbatore on 24 December 1995, Jagadeesan has carved out a reputation through meticulous consistency. His journey began with a debut in Ranji Trophy cricket in October 2016, where he kicked off his first-class career with a match-winning century and was awarded Player of the Match.

In the shorter formats, his crowning achievement came during the 2022–23 Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he etched his name into the record books with a staggering 277 off 147 balls—breaking the previous List A world record and anchoring team Tamil Nadu to an unprecedented total.

In the Tamil Nadu Premier League, Jagadeesan has been a standout performer, finishing among the tournament’s top run-scorers over multiple seasons. He has been its all-time leading run-getter through 2024—the fruits of his consistency in domestic T20 circles.

Jagadeesan confirmed that his selection into the Indian squad didn’t come as a surprise to him. He had long been on the national radar as part of the BCCI’s “targeted players list”, intended to groom future Test prospects. On a routine practice session in Coimbatore, his phone buzzed with the life-changing news: he was called up to join the Indian team at The Oval as late injury cover.

Visa formalities proceeded quickly—completed by Sunday morning—and Jagadeesan is expected to join the touring party in London by Tuesday. Within days he’ll link up with the squad preparing to play the final Test starting 31 July.

With the ICC World Test Championship series poised at 2–1 in England’s favour, Jagadeesan’s arrival adds another important dimension to India’s lineup. India had rebounded from the Trent Bridge defeat to level at Edgbaston, only to concede a narrow loss at Lord’s. The drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford set the stage for a high-stakes finale at The Oval. A win would enable India to draw the series, while England can seal a 3–1 victory with a win.

While Dhruv Jurel is expected to continue as primary wicketkeeper, Jagadeesan brings depth to the squad—with batting credentials that could earn him a spot purely as a specialist batter if needed.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir heaped praise on Pant’s grit, calling his innings with a broken foot one for the ages and urging future generations to talk about it. At the same time, he acknowledged the severity of the injury and welcomed Jagadeesan into the squad—a safe pair of hands with the bat and behind the stumps.

The selectors were faced with pressing options—Ishan Kishan was considered but was sidelined by his own ankle issue. Jagadeesan’s form and experience ultimately proved decisive. His first‑class average, red-ball consistency, and mental resilience under pressure make him a logical choice in this test of nerves for India
