Brevis and Hermann Ignite Proteas as South Africa Down Zimbabwe in Tri‑Series Opener
Harare, July 14, 2025
In a vibrant atmosphere at the Harare Sports Club, South Africa launched their Zimbabwe T20 tri‑series campaign with an emphatic five‑wicket victory over hosts Zimbabwe. Powered by a blistering 72‑run partnership between Dewald Brevis and debutant Rubin Hermann, the Proteas wrapped up the chase with 15.5 overs to spare, defending a target of 142.
Zimbabwe’s Competitive Total
After losing the toss, Zimbabwe were invited to bat and ended on a competitive 141 for 6 in 20 overs. A gritty half‑century from skipper Sikandar Raza, unbeaten on 54 off 38 balls, and a balanced cameo by Ryan Burl (29 off 20) laid the foundation.
WP:
Wesley Madhevere departed early via a hit‑wicket off Ngidi.
Brian Bennett contributed a solid 30 off 28, before falling to George Linde.
Linde starred with 3 wickets for 10 runs in 3 overs, alongside economical bowling from Ngidi and Burger.
Zimbabwe managed to post a respectable total, with extras (9) nearly matching a top under-pressure performance.
Proteas Chase: Pure Power and Composure
South Africa’s chase started rocky: they slipped to 38/3, losing Lhuan‑dre Pretorius, Reeza Hendricks, and Rassie van der Dussen early—two wickets courtesy of Richard Ngarava and one from Trevor Gwandu.
Enter the dynamic duo:
Dewald Brevis exploded with 41 runs off just 17 balls, including three massive sixes off one Burl over.
Rubin Hermann, on debut, joined the party with 45 off 37, paving the way to victory.
Their 72‑run stand was enough to seal the deal, with Corbin Bosch chipping in late (23* off 15). The professional performance highlighted South Africa’s depth and flair.
Bowler’s Spotlight
George Linde: The left-arm spinner was exceptional—3/10, including vital breakthroughs—slowing down Zimbabwe’s momentum.
Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi also impressed with disciplined spells, each claiming a wicket.
Despite Ngarava’s three for 35, he couldn’t halt the floodgates in the middle overs.
Player of the Match: Rubin Hermann
The spotlight shines on debutant Rubin Hermann, whose composed 45-ball knock provided the backbone for the chase. His maturity under pressure earned praise from pundits, solidifying his future credentials.
This marks Zimbabwe’s sixth consecutive T20I defeat to South Africa, continuing their tough run against the Proteas.
South Africa now gear up to take on New Zealand on July 16, while Zimbabwe regroup for their clash against the Black Caps.
