Sanjeev Kumar’s Legacy at 87: Remembering the Man Behind the Masterful Performances
New Delhi, Jul 9, 2025
Today marks the 87th birth anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar (born Harihar Jethalal Jariwala, 9 July 1938–6 November 1985), one of the most celebrated and versatile actors in Indian cinema. Over five decades since his debut, his contributions—ranging from sensitive dramatic portrayals to irrepressible comic timing—continue to inspire fans and filmmakers alike.
A Journey from Surat to Stardom
Born in Surat, Gujarat, Sanjeev Kumar entered films in the late 1950s under his birth name. He initially played minor roles but soon caught the attention of critics for his depth and range. His breakthrough came with Khilona (1970), a performance that won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor. He followed it up with another major accolade—his National Award for Koshish (1972), portraying a deaf-mute man with harrowing nuance.
Sanjeev’s career was punctuated by roles that displayed his chameleonic talent:
Thakur Baldev Singh in Sholay (1975): Though only in his late 30s, Sanjeev portrayed an embittered, avenging father with chilling intensity.
Dual roles in Angoor (1982): His effortless toggling between Ashok and Bahura showcased his impeccable comic timing—earning a spot among Forbes India’s “25 Best Acting Performances of Indian Cinema”.
Hari Charan Mathur in Koshish: A gut-wrenching performance that remains one of the most poignant portrayals of disability in Hindi film.
JK in Aandhi (1975): His restrained and layered political personality earned critical acclaim and a Filmfare Best Actor award.
Vijaykamal in Khilona (1970): His nuanced expression of a mentally fragile soul made this his debut to remember.
Sanjeev was renowned for embracing characters older than himself—an artistic choice born from a poignant prophecy. A palm reader once warned he wouldn’t reach old age, and Sanjeev fulfilled that life through his work, essaying roles that spanned generations.
The Man Behind the Art
Beyond the screen, Sanjeev was a complex figure: deeply romantic, introspective, and haunted by heartbreak. He maintained a string of serious relationships with prominent actresses like Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi, Sulakshana Pandit, and Anju Mahendroo, yet remained unmarried due to personal and cultural constraints.
Anju Mahendroo shared, “We had numbered his girlfriends 1,2,3… Number 3 called me today…”
His dreams of marriage with Hema Malini faltered over her career ambition, and a planned union with Shabana Azmi was halted by his mother .
Sulakshana Pandit, who once proposed to him, was turned down due to his unrequited love for Malini.
Tragically, these unfulfilled romances and emotional turbulence contributed to a profound loneliness. He comforted himself with food, eventually succumbing to heart disease at the age of 47, a fate he seemed to foresee .
Sanjeev Kumar’s legacy lives on through various tributes:
A road in Surat named Sanjeev Kumar Marg, inaugurated by Sunil Dutt.
A school and auditorium in Surat bear his name, commemorating his contributions .
India Post issued a postage stamp in 2013, celebrating his artistic impact .
The Sanjeev Kumar Foundation, established after his death, supports children’s education and cultural initiatives annually .
On his birthday today:
Social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, are filled with tributes calling him “an artist of rare depth, grace, and brilliance”.
Nostalgic fans share the classic song “Meri Bheegi Bheegi Si” from Anamika (1973)—a frequent favorite on tribute playlists.
Entertainment portals highlight five must-watch Sanjeev performances, renewing interest in gems like Angoor, Koshish, Aandhi, Sholay, and Khilona.
Unmatched versatility: From comedic twins to tragic souls, his roles defied Bollywood’s stereotypes .
Natural authenticity: Critics and peers praised his capacity to inhabit characters with unfiltered sincerity .
Awards speak volumes: Winner of two National Film Awards and multiple Filmfare honors, he is eternally ranked among the greatest Indian actors .
As Bollywood buzzes with tributes and nostalgic film screenings, Sanjeev’s remarkable career remains a template for aspiring actors: commitment to craft, fearless role selection, and emotional truth.
