Under Fire for Remarks on Col. Sofiya Qureshi, Madhya Pradesh BJP Minister Likely to Escape the Axe

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh BJP minister Kunwar Vijay Shah has come under severe criticism for his controversial remarks about retired Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, but political observers suggest he may escape disciplinary action from the party leadership.

Shah, who holds the Tourism and Culture portfolio in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led government, sparked outrage after questioning Col. Qureshi’s credentials and her role in the Indian Army. His comments were widely condemned by opposition leaders, veterans, and social media users, who accused him of disrespecting a decorated officer.

Controversial Remarks Draw Backlash

Col. Sofiya Qureshi, who served in the Army Ordnance Corps, had recently criticized the state government over its handling of a defense-related event. In response, Kunwar Vijay Shah allegedly made dismissive remarks, asking, “Who is this Colonel Sofiya Qureshi? What has she done for the country?”

The statement triggered a firestorm, with many pointing out that Qureshi had served the nation for over two decades. Opposition leaders, including Congress’s Kamal Nath, slammed Shah, calling his comments “shameful” and demanding an apology.

BJP’s Damage Control Mode

While the BJP has not officially commented on the controversy, sources indicate that the party may issue a mild reprimand to Shah rather than take strict action. Given his influence in the Malwa region and his proximity to the party’s central leadership, insiders suggest that the matter could be brushed aside quietly.

A senior BJP leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “The party does not want to escalate the issue further. Vijay Shah may be asked to clarify his statement, but no major action is expected.”

Kunwar Vijay Shah’s Political Clout

Kunwar Vijay Shah, a four-time MLA from Burhanpur, is considered a key OBC leader in Madhya Pradesh. His strong grassroots connect and loyalty to the BJP’s core ideology have often shielded him from serious repercussions despite past controversies.

Political analysts believe that with assembly elections looming, the BJP is unlikely to risk alienating Shah’s voter base. Instead, the party may focus on defusing the situation without any drastic steps.

Public and Veteran Outrage Continues

Despite the BJP’s likely soft approach, veterans and social activists continue to demand accountability. Retired Army officers have expressed disappointment, emphasizing that politicians should refrain from undermining the contributions of armed forces personnel.

Col. Qureshi, meanwhile, has maintained a dignified silence, letting her service record speak for itself.
