Wiaan Mulder’s Record-Breaking 264* Lights Up Second Test in Bulawayo

In a stellar display of skill, grit, and unshakable leadership, stand‑in captain Wiaan Mulder delivered a historic innings in the first day of the second Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo. Mulder’s undefeated 264 runs not only propelled South Africa to 465 for 4 but also etched his name into cricket lore with multiple records achieved.

Setting the Stage

South Africa’s bench strength was tested heading into the second Test. First‑choice skipper Temba Bavuma was sidelined by a hamstring injury, while his deputy Keshav Maharaj, injured during the first Test, remained on the sidelines for the second, ruled out with a groin strain. With the series opener convincingly won by 328 runs, selectors handed the ‘new ball’ to Wiaan Mulder, his first time captaining at this level .

The Day That Changed Test Captaincy History

From the outset, Mulder demonstrated why he was entrusted with the role. After early wickets—Tony de Zorzi for 10 and debutant Lesogo Senokwane for 3—Mulder, promoted to No. 3, anchored the innings. His third Test century arrived off just 118 balls, signaling intent right from the start.

The double century, reached in 214 balls, ranked as the second‑fastest by a South African in Test history—just behind Herschelle Gibbs.

He surpassed Graham Dowling’s 239 to claim the highest score on Test captaincy debut, making 264 not out the new benchmark.

His innings of 264 off 259 balls*, studded with 34 fours and 3 sixes, set the record for the most runs by a South African in a single day’s play.

The total of 465 for 4 became South Africa’s highest team total in a day’s Test play, eclipsing the prior 445 against Pakistan in 2003.

Partnerships That Powered the Charge

Mulder and David Bedingham piled on 184 runs for the third wicket. Bedingham contributed a fluent 82 before falling to Tanaka Chivanga.

  1. Mulder and teenage sensation Lhuan‑dre Pretorius, just 19, then stitched together a 217‑run stand, the second‑highest fourth‑wicket opening stand away from home for South Africa. Pretorius notched 78 off just 87 balls.

Their collective effort turned a shaky start into a run-fest that left Zimbabwe reeling.

Mulder’s innings wasn’t without tension. He was briefly bowled for 247, only to be reprieved when the delivery was ruled a no-ball. Undeterred, he rose to the challenge and powered on past 250 in 243 balls, another example of his relentless determination.

By stumps, South Africa had reached 465 for 4, with Mulder unbeaten on 264 and Dewald Brevis holding firm at 15*. Bad light halted proceedings, to be resumed today.

As Mulder resumes today, analysts will be closely watching whether he maintains aggressive intent or builds a marathon innings. Early pink-ball twilight challenges were briefly noted, but this may be less of a factor without floodlights scheduled .

His candid reflection post-day that leadership is felt most when you deliver in crunch moments will resonate with emerging captains globally.
